The 5 Biggest Interior Design Mistakes One Should Never Do.

These 5 things you should avoid if you want to create an impressive interior design.

Some people hate these, some people love them. It is kind of like the Marmites of interior design. You can eat it every day all day or you would never touch it with a stick. Pick your preference.

There are some things what I would not recommend to use in your interior design. This is my personal opinion, if you have emotional connection with any of these do not get offended and use them with confidence. For the rest of you who do not have a special connection for the below design ways or items, I offer some alternatives to use them while keeping the interior design more traditional and elegant.

  1. Ceiling Fan

It is one of my biggest nightmares. Unless you are designing a wild wild west pub I would avoid it at any cost. Again please do not take it personally. If there is a reason to it and you design a 1940s diner aesthetic, or as I mentioned before a western country style is the one you are aiming for then it is a great choice. If you would like to have a more stylish choice but you still need the functionality of it, you can see my recommendations below. The Dyson tower is a great choice with good energy rating and it is almost transparent in a space. It can be used also for heating when it is needed. The other two choices are ‘hiding’ the functionality better, while still keeping you cool.

  2. Bodiless Wall Clock

I have so many questions when I look at this picture and wondering why this concept was actually created. The reason I can imagine mots probably it’s uniqueness or the easy applying process, rental friendly system. Although these also can be achieved with other clocks, which actually have a style and actually look good. The only place I might be able to imagine fitting into the design is in the kids room, where they can learn the clock and the numbers on it. Otherwise, I would avoid it. The below suggestions have more style and character to them. The first one can be used in any luxurious and modern room, the second can be used in a a traditional room and the last one in a northern/ Scandinavian or country scheme .

  3. Hyper Minimalism

Many people love minimalism. I do not mind a reasonable amount of minimalism. It can be chic and soulful. What I dislike is hyper minimalism. It is basically another way to say that, the room is empty. You see, as an interior designer I need things to work with. For instance, some furniture and accessories as well as in my work as an interior designer I am trying to take into consideration how the space can be functional. Hyper minimalism completely lacks functionality as you have no tools to support that. I would recommend some more mild minimalist styles like the pictures below.

4. Natural wallpaper

I do not think I need to explain why did I choose this item too much. The only way I can imagine using this in a space is like for a ‘fun’ theme or a fake beach, beach bar background. Like that, it is almost acceptable. In any other case it is better to avoid it. On the pictures below I selected some wallpaper which mimics natural scenes but more tasteful and fits in style schemes.

5. Colour schemes

Colourful rooms can be tasteful and elegant however there are some combinations which are not matched on the best way. Purely repeating the colours in the scheme is not always stylish neither look nice. There are many ways to create schemes with vivid colours with a style achieving great results. As you can see above although the same colours were used over and over in the scheme, on the bed, on the walls, in the pillows and on the curtains, it has a very uncomfortable feel to it. Your eye can not rest anywhere and the 98% of the room is covered in the same four vivid colours. I collected some examples below, where the colours do not equal a restless or tasteless scheme.
